One of the more interesting places to visit around Punta del Este is a place called Casapueblo. Much of it is now used as a pretty exclusive time-share, and another portion houses a combination museum and gallery. Built by Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, the structure sits near the tip of another peninsula about 12 miles west of Punta del Este called Punta Ballena. Along with many of his works, the place is filled with memorabilia of his associations with such people as Pablo Picasso and Albert Schwietzer. He sites as his inspiration for the design the clay bread baking oven common in much of Uruguay.
The artist regarded the project as a rebellion against the straight line.
