Coroico

The mornings in Coroico would find us staring out into a thick soup of clouds and fog. By midmorning, most of that cover would be burnt off. Although we had decended more than ten thousand feet from the pass, Coroico was still a place with its head in the clouds.

Just above Coroico is this hill that is said to resemble Calvary. As we were in Coroico on Good Friday we decided to climb it. This is apparently something that is also popular with pilgrims that come from all over Bolivia. They leave small pebbles at each of the "Stations of the Cross" on the way up (left). The Chapel is called Calvario. There is an outstanding view of the town from here (below).

Although Coroico is still more than 5,500 feet above sea level the Yungas are a preview for Bolivia's Amazonian basin. The poinsettias on our hotel patio were heavy each morning with dew.
