The classic photo of
Machu Picchu actually shows the mountain Huayna Picchu (young mountain)
in the background. Machu Picchu, which means old mountain, is behind the
photographer. This however is the more dynamic photo.

Huayna Picchu is frequently
shrouded in fog. What is not readily visible in the large photo is that
there are ruins near the top (arrow left photo). The telephoto shot shows
some of them and the carved stairway leading to them.

In some of the structures
parts of the foundations are carved from the base rock.

Karen took these pictures
of the llamas and the old man so people wouldn't think we were just scanning
postcards.
