The Death Road

In spite of this road's reputation, it has become a favorite with mountain bikers, and there are scores of tour companies in La Paz that haul tourists to the top in support vehicles that follow the cyclists down. Each year a number of them continue to be lost. We were told that the road was not that bad, but there was one waterfall that was a little hairy.
When we reached this falls we figured that it wasn't all that bad. But they had said there was one tricky falls, not that there was one falls. As we were picking Karen's bike up out of the third falls, we did not have the presence of mind to take a photo. Fortunately, a helpful young man in a bus behind us was kind enough to get out and help us right the bike as the water poured down on us. The shot of that falls below was taken on the way out. This ambulance on its way to La Paz gives an idea of the width of the road.

In addition to the falls that fell on the road, there were a number of smaller falls like the one at left that just trickled over it. There were also three river crossings. Andean Condors kept a constant watch overhead.
