With dozens of places
in Huaraz offering excursions, I decided to see if I would still be able
to do some climbing following a hiatus of nearly 5 years. With full equipment
rental and a guide costing just $15 for half a day, we chose to do some
short routes right near town.

A couple of easy routes
helped to restore some confidence. Also near Huaraz--above the town of
Yungay-- is the Parque Nacional Huascaran. It is host to the beautiful
Laguna Llanganuco (below), as well as some beautiful mountain wildflowers.

The Callejon
provided us with one after another of the most breathtaking views in the
Andes.
