The Oxbow Lake


There are simply so many things to relate about Manu that you could spend hours. here ar e a few random shots--some of them from right in camp. Left to right and top to bottom: Cicada nest tubes; Praying mantis; Spiked tree; Tarantula nest with Tarantula; Leaf Toad; Vine snake; Mud puppy.

 Our next early morning excursion was to an oxbow lake (below).
Here there was another entire community of animals. Perhaps most notable is the giant river otters. These are a very territorial predator with teeth much like a puma. Each oxbow lake contains only one family. Their diet is mainly piranhas. When they raise up out of the water, it is a signal not to come any closer.
Another unusual inhabitant of the lake is the Hoatzin. Some scientists believe this to be a prehistoric bird because of the scales around its eyes.
