San Pedro de Atacama

The town of San Pedro de Atacama is a must visit for foreign visitors to Chile along what has come to be known as the Gringo trail. In truth, I have come to question our willing acceptance of the perjorative. In fact, like most other tourist areas in Chile, this would more accurately be called the Sauerkraut trail. We have met 20 German travelers for every one American while we have been in Chile. Tiny San Pedro, at any rate, has scores of tour and travel agencies, most of them run by laid back Santiaguinos. While it is touted as a typical Aymara village, there are literaly no indigenous people benefitting from the tourist trade. It is grossly overpriced and overrated. It is, however, the closest place with accomodations to some of the more interesting geography in Chile's vast desert.
This photo shows the dryness of the region.
The Salar de Atacama is one of many vast salt flats. At an altitude of nearly 10,000 feet it hosts Laguna Chaxa, which is home to some unexpected wildlife (below).
