The only locals around
the ruins were this family, an old lady cooking delicious corn and fish,
and a what we thought at first was a crazy guy who showed us some topographical
maps of the terraces. He explained in insistant bad english that the word
Pisaq meant partridge in Quechua. On the topo maps the terraces indeed
look like an enormous partridge. Unafortunately without taking a half day
hike up a mountain on the other side of the valley there is no way to see
the whole thing. In the photo below, though, you can make out the body
and the large tail. Further down the road you can see part of the head,
which is around the corner to the left in this picture.
