Valle Sagrado II

As you descend into the Valle Sagrado the first important town along the Rio Urubamba is Pisaq. This river actually changes names several times, and here it is known as the Rio Vilcanota or also Wilcamayu. Part of the extensive Incaic terraces are visible above the town. The archaeological site occupies much of the mountain top.
The only locals around the ruins were this family, an old lady cooking delicious corn and fish, and a what we thought at first was a crazy guy who showed us some topographical maps of the terraces. He explained in insistant bad english that the word Pisaq meant partridge in Quechua. On the topo maps the terraces indeed look like an enormous partridge. Unafortunately without taking a half day hike up a mountain on the other side of the valley there is no way to see the whole thing. In the photo below, though, you can make out the body and the large tail. Further down the road you can see part of the head, which is around the corner to the left in this picture.
The centuries old terraces when viewed from near the ruins are quite impressive.
